With all the noise and competition in the market today, it makes sense to look outside the traditional areas of competitive advantage. I’ve always said that the biggest competitive advantage is its right under the hat: to develop your mind. Here are ten areas of science shows that it can provide businesses and individuals for high performance a huge benefit for 2011.

1. Resilience. Have you ever wondered why some people can breeze through the ordeal and come out stronger on the other hand, while others languish, go into a depression, and take years to recover? Scientists have studied this area of recovery and can now be taught, like math. Are you one of those who take a little ‘to recover from setbacks, will make use of the learning elasticity. Best applications: sales people do with rejection, dealers, real estate professionals, rescue scene.
2. Deliberate Practice. To go from good to excellent, high performance application conscious practices a form of execution by experts who refined and perfected their craft. Best applications: surgeons, actors, entertainers, pilots, speakers and trainers.
3. Neuroplasticity. The discovery of this decade is that our brain constantly is learning and growing new brain cells every day of our lives until we die. Best applications: teachers, accountants, doctors, engineers and IT.
4. Mindfulness. Thanks to research Ellen Langer, we have a partial view of how incredibly powerful knowledge. His research showed the exact steps you need to reverse the effects of aging, including loss of vision in reverse and physical strength. Hollywood is so impressed that they make a movie about his life and Jennifer Aniston will star as Dr. Langer. Best applications: health professionals especially in long-term care facilities such as nursing homes, home health care and retirement communities.
5. Positive psychology. Thanks to books like Tony Hsieh Delivering happiness, are the directors finally get an understanding of how happiness can improve the workplace. Even my non-profit organization, the American Association luck, PBS and Fox made headlines this year. The key is not just to be happy, but being able to manage emotions both positive and negative results for high performance. Best applications: dealing with difficult employees, bullying, big companies where employee satisfaction and customer service are the nodes and management wants to reap the benefits of a positive work environment.
6. Nature vs Nurture. The science is crystal clear about what to eat can override nature much more than we previously realized. With all this talk of cracking the genetic code of DNA, we are now discovering that RNA can do almost any old way they want with a little help from the environment. Best applications: architects, landscape architects, interior designers, furniture designers, relationship therapists, life coaches, nutritionists and fitness trainers.
7. Multi-tasking. A very cool new survey showed that only 3 percent of people can multi-task well. The rest of us are actually costing us time and accuracy every day when multi-task. Interestingly, there are some companies pushing multi-tasking. One I had recently taken me reduce my chapter shows how the multi-tasking is really bad for performance because their senior management is encouraged. We need to get real about what it costs us multi-tasking. Best applications: any worker who is often distracted, can benefit from this science.
8. Insight. Now we know how to create the ideal conditions to help employees to generate more best applications “aha moments.”: R & D, marketing, artists, writers, anyone who needs to be creative and innovative.
9. Focused attention. Science has made significant progress to help us understand exactly how we can focus our attention so that our attention spans can be extended. A side effect is that when we strengthen this part of our brains, we expand our consciousness that allows us to touch more wisdom in our subconscious. Best applications: surgeon, pilot, engineer, gamer, police.
10. Decision making. Continues to be a new understanding of how we make decisions, not to mention Daniel Kahn Mann research and Amos Tversky won the Nobel Prize in area heuristics. Here we learn where our blind spots in the decision to live and train ourselves to see them. Best applications: dealers, managers, brokers, consultants, mergers and acquisitions and senior management.

Although the decade of the brain, long gone (1990), was discovered in research discoveries continue every day. It’s a very good to be alive, especially if you learn to harness the power of these scientific discoveries.
